yasipedia #9: It's you and me in the summertime...
Here’s the thing: it’s exhausting being the LA girl at the London after party. But someone had to do it. (“It” being talking about biohacking and theories about musedom and music and Erewhon and The Doors being the first punk band ever). It’s now the day after and I’m typing this with an LED mask on (one I ordered from Harrods from the plane because I forgot mine at home and am in many ways a not well person) thinking fondly of the 23 (twenty-three) year old who spent an hour flirting with me in the smoking area, a demonically gorgeous boy (messy curls, cheshire cat mouth, lash-laden green eyes, half-French for fuck’s sake), an aspiring musician (of course) who spoke very highly of Jim Morrison and Bob Dylan (of course of course). I left because the idea is better than the reality (not very French of me because I am what? An LA girl). Remember me well, unnamed rake. Write a good song about me, make it a little Leonard Cohen if you can (another inspiration, bien sûr). I do love England.
And I love attention, which according to a dour middle aged man at the party is because I am American. “We don’t do that here, it’s crass,” he said which is a massive load of shit, in his own parlance, and all of us in the circle (me, dour Brit, and Swedish rock star) were seeking it in different ways. It’s worse to pretend you don’t seek it; that’s disingenuous and I’d rather be crass (LA girl, LA girl) than disingenuous any day. The Swede claimed he didn’t want the attention for himself, only for the band, only for the ART. But is he not the emblem of the band, I demanded. He supposed so but that’s not really him he insisted. Well exactly! It’s really not any of us. Even the you being charming and saying hilarious things at the party isn’t you. The Brit remained unconvinced but I think I got the Swede thinking which is all you can ask for (outside of attention).
In honour of my time in the UK and also because I haven’t sent this newsletter in a while (been doing LA girl shit also see Hoobastank gif), here’s some extra color for my Sundays heads:
HERE is full audio of The Sundays’ first ever show (I think?) on August 20th 1988 at The Falcon.
Here is their 1989 Peel Session
Here is a charming interview with Kurt Loder on MTV in 1990 (we used to be a proper society fr)
Here is a scan of their 1990 Melody Maker feature by Everett True.
A French radio session in 1992
Hosting 120 Minutes in 1993
