yasipedia #8: I'm coming WALTZING back bitch, it's my birthday, and David Matthews Band part 1
It’s come to my attention that it’s been a few weeks since my last yasipedia and aside from the fact that I do not believe in linear time please see below:
Also today is my birthday so you legally are not allowed to be mad at me. If you are a reply guy, you are however allowed to click HERE.
I don’t know about these dour bitches who are like I don’t care about my birthday like there’s some cash prize for self reduction but me? I love my birthday. I love getting older (most of it) and I love feeling the fucks given seep out of my body and famously I love attention. Sue me!
Also not to be on some Swiftie math shit but I turn 41 today…birthday #41 if you will…on May 19th…the day that David Matthews and his band put out their 10th studio album Walk Around The Moon…the day after the long awaited Dave Matthews Band resplain episode. It’s a beautiful day to be a Dave-head. Celebrate we WILL babe.
If that’s not enough of an embarrassment of riches, yesterday a brilliant GQ profile of David John Matthews came out, expertly written by my pal and Bandsplain repeat guest Alex Pappademas, featuring a few gorgeous little quotes from your favorite podcaster. No, not Rob Harvilla. Your second favorite podcaster.
Let’s move on from me debasing myself in print and how about I give to you just what you are seeking etc:
Here is the famed Recently EP with the “pumpkin” cover giving United Colors of Benetton. You can buy it for $35.
Here is Dave Matthews Band playing the iconic song “Granny” at Red Rocks which they for some reason cut from the first album even though it slaps and bangs.
Here’s a photo of producer Steve Lillywhite with a (proud but maybe not proudest) monkey.
Oh nothing just a young David regaling the customers of Blockbuster Video (may it rest in peace) with a stirring version of “Satellite” (we used to be a proper country).
Here is the poem “Prayer In The Pentagon” that “Typical Situation” is based on.
Read my colleague Katie Baker’s excellent retrospective on Crash HERE.
Here is David and Stefan on MTV’s Alternative Nation with famed Libertarian Kennedy.
But the band's truest pleasures are nonverbal, in the cooperative glee behind each clockwork vamp.
My favorite line from the god Jon Pareles’ NY TIMES review of Crash
no YOU’RE crying
David on Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher in 1997
A very awesome and random conversation between David and Tori Amos in Newsweek in 1998. Here is my favorite part:
But you both can talk about sex.
TA: Oh no, no. I'll turn red. Not while he's sitting here. I'm not going to talk about sex.
DM: Sex is, it's, it's like a thing, right? That people do. I'm going to have some coffee so I don't say some things I'm going to regret.
TA: You're charming, I'm telling you. Do you have a woman?
DM: Yes, I do. She's here with me.
TA: That's fantastic. She's very lucky. I'm sure you're lucky, too.
DM: I am very lucky.
TA: But you're such a gentleman. That's a wonderful quality. I just like all that.
DM: I'm not going to say anything. I'm just going to let you glow.
TA: I'm the type of woman that I don't need to open the door for myself. You know what I mean? I can negotiate my own deal, but it's nice to have the door opened for me or the wine poured. I just love chivalry.
DM: I have to walk on the puddley side of the pavement.
I too am the type of woman who doesn’t need to open the door for myself!!! Speak on it Tori!!!!
Here is “Spoon” off BTCS performed live in 2013 with Brandi Carlile doing the Alanis part.
Here is Grayson’s senior essay on Dave Matthews Band signed by the members of Dave Matthews Band.
