The Pavement movie has a real trailer and I have a new emotional support album
plus new Turnstile, new Waterboys, and my tiny violin
I’d like to get back to intermittently sending this thing without getting too into the whole fire thing (not to diminish the devastating impact of the Los Angeles wildfires on anyone else at all, and probably shouldn’t be doing so re: myself, can see my therapist deeply frowning now) but it turns out people don’t really like it when you tra la la past your house burning down I’ve learned (mostly at parties where I’m trying to eat cheese and smoke cigs) because actually people are kind and good and care. So before getting into the Pavement movie trailer of it all, I’ll say that I am doing pretty well! (If you’re like I actually do not care how you are doing, I want the bullet points, that is also fine - scroll on down babe). Most days are good, some great, some real bad, pretty much the same averages as other people I assume except my bad days pertain to grappling with something that even after nearly twelve years of therapy, lots of meditation, War and Peace levels of journaling, several astrologers, and various other “tools” and “work” I’m still having a hard time fully wrapping my head around? I sort of oscillate between feeling like this (20%):
and feeling enormously lucky (80%) for my particular situation and its circumstances, and especially the support of my family and friends (I want you to hear some beautiful uplifting instrumental music here), and doubly especially the incredible deluge of kindness, love, and gifts! (music SWELLS here babe) from people I don’t know. I was in such a fugue state during the first few weeks that I didn’t think to keep track of the names and addresses of people who sent me magazines, books, CDs, records, t-shirts, a truly surprisingly great pair of old Madewell skinny jeans, and more so I could send thank you notes, so if you are reading this and you were one of those people, please drop me a note and let me know your address and what you sent. It has meant the world and you’ve all gotten me a great head start on becoming an alarming hoarder of memorabilia once again.
Anyway I’m reporting live from my parents house (I’ve taken to referring to them as my roommates because Grandma’s Boy) and I felt compelled to get this thing going again, mostly because of this:
which felt like compelling music-related news I needed to report on. Apparently I need to really work on my interviewing game because he neglected to mention this powerful piece of information on my show but instead shared it with Jesse Tyler Ferguson of Modern Family fame.
What else?
The Pavement movie, Pavements, directed by Alex Ross Perry put out its first official trailer like 2 weeks ago (after the not exactly like fake but not exactly real trailer that came out a month ago). The film will be screening in LA on 5/2 (sold out), NYC on 5/9, and everywhere else in June. I’ve seen it and I have thoughts and feelings but you’ll have to wait for the Bandsplain episode about it in early May.
Turnstile put out a new song and they’re in their 311 bag in the best way possible imo.
Is Elastica reuniting? There’s been some action…their official Instagram page popped up out of nowhere last fall and had been posting semi-regularly since…get the prayer circles going.
Fiona Apple guested on vocals on a song on the new Waterboys album Life, Death, and Dennis Hopper and it’s incredible? Bruce Springsteen also pops up on a track. I feel like this band is heavily overdue for a revival?
I heard the new crushed album and the new Blondshell album and they’re both really good.
Clem Burke of Blondie passed away. As Ken Tucker put it in Rolling Stone in 1978 “Clem Burke’s drumming always carried the band beyond mere art rock.” Listen to “Dreaming” and you’ll see what he means.
I really like what Jordan Patterson is doing. I saw her open for Cameron Winter back in December and she caught my attention. She’s put out two singles this year and her first album is out in May.
Speaking of Cameron Winter, my new emotional support album is the excellent new Deafheaven, Lonely People With Power. In this house we love it when George screams. (I guess this means I’m in the “anger” stage).
Are you watching The Pitt? I am so truly, madly, deeply watching The Pitt. I am standing with Dr. Robbie on a mountain top.
Also in case you missed it, I went on The Big Picture to talk to Amanda Dobbins about Nicole Kidman’s wigs, amongst other topics.
See you next time xx
