Monday Mixtape is another path towards music discovery, featuring people whose taste I admire answering a series of questions and prompts with songs (which might change from time to time)
Cain Culto is the project of Andrew Estevan Padilla, an artist with one of the more intriguing backstories I’ve come across. He grew up in a Colombian and Nicaraguan household, raised on salsa and cumbia, then moved to Kentucky, where he learned bluegrass fiddle and eventually became an evangelical worship leader (stay with me). After coming out, he left the church, packed up his Christian band Ecclesia, and came back as the artist now known as Cain Culto.
Probably due to this network of complex inputs, his music is borderline impossible to describe? There’s the fiddle of course, strains of vallenato, bullerengue, and hip-hop, some dark wave in there too? Songs that tackle the spirit, witchcraft, identity, capitalism, politics. His biggest song is called “KFC Santería,” (undeniably amazing name) and has been remixed by Sudan Archives and Peaches. He’s also covered “Like a Prayer” because he just plain has good taste. His latest, CULTO, came out this past Friday.
