Monday Mixtape: Boyish
Monday Mixtape is a new thing (segment?) I’m doing on Fast & Loose for another path towards music discovery through people whose taste I admire through a series of questions and prompts (which might change from time to time). Here is the first one.
Boyish is a band I discovered last year via PR email roulette. Made up of lead vocalist India Shore, vocalist and guitar player Claire Altendahl, Boyish released their excellent debut alum Gun in September of 2025. It’s moody, broody, vibey, atmospheric, ragged, and beautiful. Here’s what they’ve been listening to.
Boyish
Claire: Leo Sun, Sag Rising, Scorpio Moon
India: Aries Sun, Scorpio Rising, Libra Moon
Los Angeles, CAHow do you find/discover music?
Claire: I go to my local library and scour the internet. Mostly I take an artist I love, and then read every interview with them to figure out who inspired their projects, then I listen to that artist, and then I look up who inspired them. For some reason, the library makes me hungrier than anywhere else on earth, so I really only have a couple good hours of searching before I have to go home. Also India shows me a lot of music.
India: I usually go to the library with Claire, and do a similar study of who has listened to who, and how it’s inspired their own music. I’m also more chronically online than Claire is, so I’ll see what music people are talking about while I’m lurking in various places on the internet.
What was the first song you put on when you woke up this morning?
Claire: Wire “Strange”
India: Madonna “What It Feels Like For A Girl”
What song have you listened to more than once this past week?
India: Willie Nelson “Can I Sleep in Your Arms” - over and over again
Claire: Hole “Doll Parts”
What is a recent song you think everyone should know about?
We both love “Peppa Pig” by Slut Intent, off of their new record Slutworld. How many sluts does it take to make a great record?
A song off your work out playlist:
Claire: I was at a boxing gym a couple months ago and they played “How You Remind Me” by Nickelback (ed note: god tier song)
India: I’m having a hard time admitting this but “Ready to Run” by One Direction, it tells my mind and body that it is in fact ready to run
What song can you do at karaoke without looking at the tv screens?
India: Kate Bush “Wuthering Heights”
Claire: Meatloaf “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad”
Song you associate with being 13 years old:
Claire: Trey Songz “Bottoms Up”
India: ABBA “Knowing Me, Knowing You” - my sister and I had a dance
What song do you listen to when you want a lobotomy?
Claire: Neil Young “Arc (Live)” - this is what I listen to at the library the most.
India: Patrick Swayze and Wendy Fraser “She’s Like The Wind” (ed note: also a god tier song, may he rest in peace)
What song do you use to indulge your wallowing?
Claire: Linda Ronstadt “Long Long Time”
India: Nico “These Days”
What song do you use to renew your spirit?
Claire: Laura Nyro “Wedding Bell Blues” - just marry me Bill already pls God
India: Bruce Springsteen “Atlantic City”
What is your favorite cover song?
Claire: Nina Simone’s “Lilac Wine”, the Jeff Buckley version is great too, but I think Nina’s is my favorite.
India: The Breeders “Happiness is A Warm Gun”
What song would you like to hear just before you die?
Claire: “Jim Cain” by Bill Callahan, he’s just asking all of life’s great questions like “how much a tree bends in the wind?” I think I would want my life to be summed up by his lyric: “Remember the good things I have done.”
India: The Blue Nile “Saturday Night”

Damn, Boyish are a God damn galaxy of radness. Their song "Howls" is so awesome that you might (will!) divide your life by the era when you had no idea it existed, and when you heard this glorious example of FUCK YEAH (I'd add Ellur's "Alive" to that, holy fuck, what a song)
The Spotify link didn't work for me. I love the idea though! Keep this going!
