What’s up party people jk imagine if I started sentences like that (actually I guess you could imagine, and you know what maybe I WILL, it feels like it’s time to bring back “party people” and also using the word “Swayze” as in “guys I’m Swayze” to mean “I’m out,” harkening back to becoming a specter a la Patrick in the film Ghost). Last night I went to one of me and David Lynch’s favorite restaurants, Bob’s Big Boy in Toluca Lake, for a Miaou x Adidas event hosted by Gabriette and Devon Lee Carlson. Every person there was an extremely hot and stylish 24 year old that I vaguely recognized from social media. It was a great party (started at 7pm, ample seating, free food) and they tricked out Bob’s with Miaou x Adidas logos on the cups, on the windows, even burned into the burger buns (you already know I had a burger and also fries). They even tricked Bob himself out (see below). Was I the third oldest person there? Maybe but who is counting.
The collection is super cute. I particularly love the yellow handbag (Alexia is holding it in the photo). After that there was a Khaite party across town at Dan Tana’s which I was not invited to per se but I was invited to crash with my friend who was deejaying (walking in behind him, carrying his flash drive/headphones I guess) however he did not go on until 11pm so I have no idea how that turned out but I’m sure it was fab.
What else? I have a skincare update (what is the organizing principle of this newsletter? We will never know):
In my ongoing war as a 43 year old woman (soldier) shoved in front of the camera (shoved lol I love attention who am I kidding) I got a new treatment last Friday…microneedling with umbilical cord stem cells. Is this FDA approved? None of my business! I looked nuts for a few days and my skin peeled off like a snake, but today, one full week together, my take is that I am willing to go to prison for this treatment. My under eyes are fuller, my pores are miniscule, and everything just looks more glowy and lifted. If I were actually good at posting about this stuff I would include a photo but every picture I have from the day of the treatment was taken only for the kind and loving eyes of my group chats. I will also still be throwing a filter on all the clips from the podcast though, as is my legal right (until I go to prison, where presumably nobody films you anyway).
Back to music. I didn’t go to the Geese show in LA last week (this is a newsletter about things I didn’t go to, reverse party-reporting) because tickets were like $900 on the black market and I didn’t realize until the day after that I had an in to get on the list (god works in mysterious ways) but I did hear that Bono attended with like a plus six or something. I also heard something else insane that I’m not allowed to share (annoying I know) but the combination of these pieces of info plus the general mass surge in Geese-posting all over social media leads me to believe next year is going to Turnstile them into outerspace. Not undeserved (though I still think the Cameron Winter solo album is better sorry!!!).
The Grammy nominations have come out and once again I have been snubbed but my friend Cody aka SSION got a well-deserved nom for his work on the album cover for Glory by Perfume Genius. He is extremely cool and extremely talented across multiple disciplines (music, directing, art, photography) which would be extremely annoying except that he is also extremely nice. I don’t really care about the Grammys broadly speaking (fool’s errand) but I am somewhat invested in these noms: Turnstile, hayley Williams, Wet Leg, The Cure, and Deftones. I hope Wet Leg, Hayley, and Deftones perform together (this won’t happen but a girl can dream).
My pal and MTV legend Matt Pinfield posted this photo from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame rehearsals today and now I am very interested in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a thing I also previously did not care about at all. Both Hiro Yamamato AND Ben Shepherd are performing with Soundgarden? LFG. I don’t know who will be singing in Chris Cornell’s stead - there’s been photos posted of rehearsals with members of Pearl Jam and also Taylor Momsen (okay!) but I think it should be Hayley Williams. (I think she should sing everything? Massive Attack ft Hayley Williams when).
Here’s what I’ve been listening to/reading/watching:
One of the most important bands in the world, Hüsker Dü, got a big vinyl box set release courtesy of Numero Group this week. 1985: The Miracle Year is a 4-LP set that includes Beau Sorenson’s restoration of an entire January 30 1985 set plus 20 extra live tracks from that same year. You can listen to it here as well.
This song is not new, it’s from 2019, but my friend Sam Hunt showed me this artist Spike Fuck from Australia and it’s so good??? It’s giving Burger Records 2012 but in a highly complimentary way, like the platonic ideal of weirdo like 60s Vegas lounge singer mixed with post-punk and new wave? I’ll have ten. Rick Owens is a fan and if it’s good enough for Rick it’s good enough for me.
I interviewed Ian Shelton of Militarie Gun about their new album and god and Killing Joke and some other stuff. You can listen to it here.
Someone I follow on Instagram or somewhere recommended this book Mating by Norman Rush (maybe it was Nicolaia Rips?) and I have been slowly reading it in chunks, in between books about trip hop for work, and I am deeply enjoying it. It’s extremely 1991 but also unlike anything I’ve ever read, I keep having to stop and jot down notes about these sort of profound statements about life and human relationships that Rush has couched into the female protagonist’s first person narration.
I haven’t read this one yet but I cannot wait for it - Mary H.K. Choi announced her fourth book, a novel called Pool House, is now available for pre-order. This description? POOL HOUSE is a course charted through the wilderness of motherhood, a story about the challenges of navigating class, fame, burgeoning sexuality, and grief as two women grapple with what it means to grow up and grow older in Hollywood. !!!!!!!!
If you need to calm your nervous system this little two minute ditty by Rachel Chinouriri ft. my beloved Boyish is like the sonic equivalent of breathing into a paper bag.
And if anyone wants to talk about The Diplomat, my current favorite show on television, I am available. Felicity I will follow you to the ends of the earth girl.
As always all the songs mentioned in this post live in the Fast & Loose playlist HERE
